The study, funded by Cancer Research UK, looked at data on e-cigarettes and smoking from 132,252 people in England between July 2016 and May 2023.
Researchers at University College London (UCL) say the use of single-use e-cigarettes by 18 – to 24-year-olds is contributing to the use of highly addictive nicotine in England.
After the single-use e-cigarette epidemic in 2021, the odds of 18 – to 24-year-olds saying they vaped increased by 99 percent each year, compared with 39 percent of 25 – to 44-year-olds and 23 percent of those 45 and older.
The proportion of young people tripled during this period, from 9% in May 2021 to 29% in May 2023.
