Costa Rican authorities announced on May 14 that they would “ban products containing synthetic nicotine” in the country.

The Health Ministry said in a statement that the resolution would prohibit “the sale, use, marketing, advertising, promotion and sponsorship of e-cigarette liquids containing synthetic nicotine and cannabinoids.”

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned in a December 2023 report that “urgent control measures are needed on e-cigarettes” because “they do not help smoking cessation and there is alarming evidence of health hazards.”

“E-cigarettes containing nicotine are harmful to health and highly addictive,” the WHO said in its report.
